As this summer’s European Championships in France approach, Scotland supporters will once again be left at home to lick their wounds and dream of what could have been. However, consolation can be sought in this month’s Rare & Collectable Whisky Auction at McTear’s, where there is huge Scottish representation as always with hundreds of magnificent malts, brilliant blends and great grain whiskies.
Consistently performing well at major events, Macallan is very much the Germany of the whisky auction scene. Once again McTear’s are spoilt for choice, with a hat-trick of Gran Reservas (Lots 977, 1068 and 1101) , a brace of 25 Year Old Anniversary Malts (Lots 1055 and 1061) and a swerving, 40 yard, half-volley of a 1981 Royal Marriage bottling in Lot 1067.
With the metrosexual sensation Cristiano Ronaldo as their figurehead, Portugal are very much the dark horses of this month’s tournament. Equally underestimated - but not nearly as impressive physically - are the Cadenhead ‘dumpy’ bottlings in Lots 1104-1107, which are sure to cause a stir amongst bidders and with each valued at £300-400, there are some serious bargains to be had.
In recognition of Wales’ fantastic achievement of qualifying for Euro 2016, it seems fitting to draw attention to Lot 1199. This features two different 10 Year Old expressions of Macallan, but most interestingly, a Flower of Scotland bottling from their ‘Sporting Heroes’ range paying tribute to a fresh-faced Ryan Giggs. At £80-120 this represents great value for whisky drinkers, with the Ryan Giggs bottle sure to put hairs on your chest.
Finally, McTear’s are delighted to see the return of the Wine Auction this month, with a wonderful selection of wines from France and beyond. The Sir Winston Churchill 1988 Champagne Jeroboam makes a triumphant return, after making an impressive £1300 hammer price in March. Who will be the lucky owner of this 3 litre bottle of goodness by the end of the auction?
Happy bidding, and bonne chance!
