More choice for your money

The Coins & Banknotes Auction was made a regular, standalone feature in McTear’s calendar over five years ago but its contents are rarely ‘regular,’ as is the case in the upcoming 22 May sale. From a solid 22ct gold commemorative Churchill medal (lot 580) to a gold 1897 USA dollar (lot 566) and a collection of 136 1960s Scottish £5 notes (lot 541), collectors never know what to expect but are always spoilt for choice.

With an estimate of £800–1200, the Churchill medal at lot 580 has wide appeal, from gold buyers and investors to Churchill enthusiasts. The gold USA dollar that is lot 566 (£400–700) will be competed for around the globe with McTear’s live bidding. Banknotes in recent sales have caused quite a stir with many lots selling for multiples of their pre-sale estimates. The rarity of examples consigned to auction recently makes estimating these items difficult, but with the size and buying power of the audience, these always make their money, so to speak.
