One for the books!

One standout feature of The Works of Art, Medals, Militaria & Furniture Auction on 11 October is an extensive and impressive collection of books, including examples dating from the 17th Century onwards. Covering a variety of genres, the collection includes titles by authors including Dickens, De Foe and Julia Pardoe.

 

 

 

 

A few titles of note include a First Edinburgh Edition of Poems by Robert Burns (lot 1573), The Workes by Benjamin Jonson (lot 1579) and the History of the Union between England and Scotland by Daniel De Foe (lot 1582).

 

 

 

 

 

 

Another highlight is lot 1581, Honor, Mililitary and Civill, by Sir William Segar. A portrait painter and officer of arms to the court of Queen Elizabeth I of England, Segar (c. 1554–1633) was is known to have written at least thirteen manuscript and printed works, on heraldry. This impressive calf bound book includes eight full length portraits as well as illustrations within the text, and comes estimated at £1000-1500.
