The Rolex Day-Date was introduced in 1956. Only produced in solid eighteen-carat gold or platinum, this was the first watch to display not only the date but also the day.
Lot 858 in the upcoming Watches Auction is a platinum example. With an impressive diamond bezel and with two pear cut diamonds to the dial, this is a very rare edition of the watch. Adding to its scarcity is something very special indeed – its meteorite dial.
This is unassuming but beautiful component is believed to have been created from the famous Gibeon meteorite. This fell to Earth in prehistoric times, landing near Gibeon in Namibia. Acid etched with the unmistakable ‘Widmanstätten pattern,’ this mesmerising silvery-grey dial catches the light beautifully.
The meteorite is now protected and therefore cannot be harvested any further. No more Rolex watches will be created with a similar dial, further increasing the allure of this watch.
Estimated at £20,000 - £30,000 this watch is sure to capture the eye of many bidders, and admirers, for a long time to come.
