Proof and commemorative coins achieving excellent prices at Glasgow auction

The Coins Auction at McTear’s continues to thrive, and June’s auction was no exception.

Lot 1593, a Britannia Gold Proof Set, was the star of the show selling for an eye-catching £1300!

Silver commemorative sets were also selling well, with several selling far above estimate. A particular highlight was lot 1591, a collection of silver proof commemorative coins, which sold for more than double the estimate at £220. Lot 1582 also fared well selling above estimate at £160.

Sovereigns continued to sell well with almost all selling above their lower estimates. It seems McTear's specialist auction really is the place to buy and sell coins of all shapes and sizes.

McTear's are also very happy to report that the upturn in the popularity of banknotes shows no signs of slowing. The auction has been recently expanded to include banknotes as well as coins so it was good to see lot 1527, a collection of mainly Scottish banknotes, selling for a very pleasing £55. The upcoming auction in July already has an impressive selection of banknotes from all over the world so please keep an eye on the website for details.

This auction is always full of interesting and rare coins, and we hope to see you at The Coins & Banknotes Auction in July.
