Rare Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre to be offered at Glasgow Auction

The British & Continental Ceramics & Glass Auction is carrying a little bit of magic: two Wedgwood ‘Fairyland Lustre’ vases, lots 506 and 507, to be offered on March 24th 2015 at McTear’s. These magnificent ceramics are finely-coloured examples of Wedgwood artistry, designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones. The smaller vase bears a ‘Tree serpent’ pattern, while the larger one is decorated with the ‘Imps on a Bridge’ pattern and is expected to fetch between £1000-2000 at auction.

The Wedgwood name is synonymous with carefully crafted designer dinnerware, cutlery and décor, and these two vases certainly live up to the name. They have been painted boldly but meticulously, and perfectly fired to leave a smooth, vibrant glaze. Their designer, Susannah Margaretta “Daisy” Makeig-Jones (1881-1945) went to work for Wedgwood in 1909, and the ‘Fairyland Lustre’ is her signature design, depicting fanciful scenes in striking, bright colours.

Each vase is marked with a serial number, attesting to its authenticity. As exemplars of the signature period from a designer for one of the world’s most famous pottery firms, these vases combine rarity with high quality craftsmanship. Visit McTear’s for the March Auction Events Week and you may fall under their spell!
