Sign of the Times

Pulling into the McTear’s station in our upcoming Works of Art, Medals, Militaria & Furniture Auction (17 July) is a superb collection of vintage railway signs.

This single vendor collection, comprising twenty-nine signs and a signalling device, has been amassed over a number of years, and showcases a variety of rare and classic railway stations through their iconic enamel signs.

Following the Beeching Report of 1963, 55% of Britain’s extensive railway stations were closed, this being to make up for a significant loss in profits brought about by increased automobile ownership. Whilst the deeply unpopular report forced many of the nation’s smaller stations to close, signs and other related railwayana found it’s way into the hands of collectors, with a number of pieces continuing to circulate the market.

We at McTear’s are delighted to be offering the following collection for sale, with many of the most popular destinations, from Breich to Welling, up for grabs.

So make sure to purchase your ticket before boarding, for what promises to be another memorable auction!
