Silver Game Birds Take Flight

Amongst the recent flurry of auctions, an impressive silver cast model of a grouse (lot 808) far exceeded its estimate in the first Silver Auction of 2019 at McTear’s.  The captivating bird received much attention in the lead up to the auction and caught many eyes during viewing.  Estimated at £600-800, the lot gained competitive bidding in the room and on the telephone before the hammer fell at £1,700 to an online bidder based in the north of Scotland. Modelled as an enchanting grouse with an acute attention to detail, the lot is certainly a conversation starter as well as a remarkable decorative item.

It is no surprise then that lot 818, a pair of pheasant menu holders, also appealed widely.  The Edwardian menu holders were each modelled in the form of a pheasant on a cylindrical plinth inlaid with red enamel.  In very good condition, with the enamel intact, lot 818 also exceeded its estimate with the hammer falling at £360.
