Chris Bushe – Harbours Edge [Lot 520] – Evening Comes, Thira [Lot 521]– On the Terrace, Massouri [Lot 522]

Chris Bushe’s richly textured landscapes bring a sense of calm to any interior. We have three pieces by the artist in this month’s auction, each of which has its own unique painterly quality that is instantly recognisable as Bushe’s. Each are offered at attractive estimates of £350-550 each.

567 – John Bellany – Woman of the Sea - £4000-600

Lot 567 has all the classic elements of a Bellany. Throughout his career the human figure remained a central figure in his art. 1985 proved to be an annus horribilis for the artist, losing both his second wife, Juliet, and his father, so this became a period of quiet reflection which was evident in his paintings. Warm hues of orange, yellow and red with blue contrasts dominated his palette, and Woman of the Sea is a fine example of Bellany’s transition into a brighter phase of his artistry.

711 – John Byrne – Girl With Monkey - £200-400

Always popular with collectors, Paisley born John Byrne’s early work is intriguing and very much sought after. Created in 1972, Girl with Monkey is an unsettling composition depicting a child who appears to be both a young girl and an adult. Signed with the moniker ‘Patrick’, which Byrne used in his early days as an artist, lot 711 will appeal to keen collectors of Byrne’s work.

762 – Gordon Hope Wyllie – Quiet Evening, Kintyre - £600-900

Gordon Hope Wyllie’s dreamlike landscapes have proved extremely popular with collectors over the last year, with the higher estimates outstripped by determined bidders. It’s easy to see why – Wyllie’s intimate knowledge of the Scottish landscape resulted in sensitive and immersive compositions, with wonderful attention to detail, and has since become one of Scotland’s most sought after artists at auction. Lot 762 is another stunning example of his work and carries an auction estimate of £600-900.
