Spring Flowers  

Born in Kent in 1874, artist Dorothea Sharp became an accomplished artist, known for creating joyous and bright oil compositions. It was in Paris where she encountered the work of the Impressionists— in particular Claude Monet—who would have a profound impact on her artistic style throughout her long career, evident in her spontaneous and heavy brushstrokes.  Her most popular depictions were those of idyllic scenes of children and delightful floral still lifes.

Lot 375 in April’s British & International Pictures Auction is one such still life, ‘Mixed Flowers’. Sharp thought that the choice of colour was just as important as the form of the artwork, and this ideology is clear in ‘Mixed Flowers’, with colour choices that capture the light and shadow of the vase and the brightness of the flowers and surrounding interior.  Considered one of the most significant figures in 20^th Century British painting, she exhibited widely in her lifetime and was a member of the Society of Women Artists, the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and also exhibited at the Royal Academy. With an estimate of £4,000-8,000, ‘Mixed Flowers’ is an exceptional example of Sharp’s signature style, and will be a worthy addition to any art collection.
