Born in 1941 and trained in Germany, Roy Sarkin embodies a brilliant fusion of traditional European goldsmithing finesse with the vibrant spirit of South Africa’s landscape and creatures.
Working out of his studio in White River, near the famed Kruger National Park, Sarkin draws deep inspiration from the surrounding natural wonders. Elephants, wild cats, bushbabies, exotic birds all frequently become his muses; not your typical animal motifs, they’re brought to life with motion, character and personality, defined by striking sculptural form, rather than just pretty illustration.
Well-known for his obsessive attention to technique and coming dashing with new ideas, every single piece that Sarkin produces is made completely by hand, working in gleaming white gold or platinum; he enhances his designs by setting them with beautiful diamonds and vibrant coloured stones like ruby, sapphire, emerald, tanzanite, and tourmaline.
McTear's Jewellery Auction, taking place on February 18th, will feature six showstoppers designed by Sarkin.
Further entries for this auction are invited until the end of January.
