The Innocence of Youth at McTear's Auctioneers

The young and the innocent feature strongly in The Scottish Pictures Auction on November 6th, as the naiveté of children is often a popular subject for artists and collectors. Joan Eardley’s ‘A ‘Street Urchin’ in Blue Shorts’ (lot 1803) is an instantly recognisable work by the artist, as it is in her unique style of darker tones contrasted by bright pastels. The picture depicts a young impoverished boy, a prominent theme of the artist living in post-war Glasgow.

Lighter scenes of children are shown in two Edward Atkinson Hornel paintings in the upcoming auction. ‘Blossom and Bluebells’ (lot 1693) is a classic Hornel, full of colour and life with three young girls playing amongst blossoming flowers. ‘Swan Lake’ (lot 1706) is again typical Hornel with a young girl feeding swans, a storybook scene! A delightful painting of two young girls relaxing in the warm sun makes one reminiscent of childhood summers, a scene depicted in Robert Gemmell Hutchison’s ‘Ladybird, Ladybird’ (lot 1695). These lots are just a few in The Scottish Pictures Auction that are jovial, youthful, and certain to brighten up any collectors’ day!

The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction on Sunday, November 9th is another one to look forward to, as it includes many strong female artists with distinctive styles. Shelagh Campbell’s vibrant and colourful oils are sure to brighten up any room, and May Burn’s abstract coastal scenes are an imperative piece for any collection. Basia Roszak’s ‘Duet with Falling Leaves’ (lot 2094) is a subtle, thought-provoking portrait of a young woman. It is a delight to be auctioning such strong and stunning paintings by some leading ladies in the current art market.

The Scottish Pictures Auction and The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction provide outstanding works by leading Scottish artists that exemplify the best works that the country has to offer, hope to see you there!
