In McTear’s latest six-weekly Coins & Banknotes Auction it was once again a gold proof coin, in this case, a set, that took the top-selling spot. Lot 512 was the UK Three Pound set dating to 2014. Proof coins are those that immediately after minting are sealed into plastic capsules in order that they remain in new condition.
This lot was closely followed by six 1oz gold coins that all sold for between £680 and £750. Most countries have a gold coin that is one ounce in weight, for the UK the Britannia 1oz coin is always popular. South Africa’s is the Krugerrand, a coin that has been considered controversial in the past.
