Ahead of the Scottish Pictures auction on Wednesday 6 June, specialist Jenny MacLeod takes a closer look at the work of Glasgow Boy, James Paterson (1854 – 1932).
Next month McTear’s is delighted to present for sale James Paterson’s exquisite The White Roses.
Although primarily a landscape painter, Paterson executed a number of still life compositions throughout his career. The White Roses exemplifies his elegance as a painter; the roses are set dramatically against the deep, dark background and the furnishing details of the cabinet and the folds in the roses illustrate his attention to detail.
Paterson was a master in his use of tone which he took from his training in France, and this oil on canvas exudes a beautiful elegance that is also distinctly Glasgow School.
The White Roses is lot 223 in the Scottish Pictures auction with an estimate of £6,000 – 9,000.
Entries are currently invited for the Scottish Pictures auction until Monday 21 May. Please contact pictures@mctears.co.uk for further information on consigning.
