Unusual silver lots yield excellent hammer results at auction

Perhaps one of the most interesting silver items in the The Silver Auction, held Tuesday 13th January, was lot 49, a large Victorian silver ewer made for Alfred Cornish from ‘The Bohemians.’ The Bohemian Club was founded in Melbourne in 1875 as a young men’s club and as a counterpart to the Melbourne Club, a men-only private social club established in 1838 in Melbourne. The interest in this large and intricately worked ewer was reflected in the bids in the room, internet and over the phone. Estimated between £600-900, the hammer finally landed on a whopping £1300! Some other interesting objects in the auction included lot 93, a beautiful silver and blue guilloche enamel desk clock which sold above estimate for £170; lot 18 was a charming silver novelty pin cushion modelled in the form of a pig, and this also sold above estimate for £90 hammer.

Silver tea sets continued to be popular in the saleroom, with lot 105, an Edwardian silver four piece tea set, estimated between £400-600 and selling for £550, and a large lot of George V composite silver flatware, lot 36, sold for the healthy sum of £2,200.
Silver continues to yield excellent hammer results, and McTear’s have now opened entries for the next Auction, taking place Tuesday, 24th March. For more information, please contact staff on 0141 810 2880 or email auction@mctears.co.uk
