Violin soars above estimate

A violin (1406) has soared above its estimate in the recent Clocks, Scientific & Musical Instruments Auction on 26 April 2019.  The instrument features a one piece 14 inch back, with marks to the interior reading ‘La Comodo J. Barbe 1827.’ Contained in a fitted case with two bows, the violin was the best-selling instrument and the overall highest selling lot in the eclectic auction.

The lot gained interest across all platforms, from the room to the internet and on the phone.  The fierce competition allowed the price to climb higher and higher, creating anticipation and excitement in the room. Eventually, the violin sold to a London based buyer on the telephone, achieving a remarkable hammer price of £3,600. The proceeds will benefit a Glasgow charity, making this lot even more of an achievement.
