An American Design Classic to Make You Sit Up and Take Notice

The joy of antiques is their ability to transport us to other times and places, indeed a very different world than ours.

This couldn’t be more true as we look through the catalogue for Other Places: Fine Furniture & Works of Art, with iconic American designers Charles and Ray Eames taking us back to the late 1950s with their classic EA108 office swivel chair by Vitra.

With an estimate of £1,000 to £1,500 for a set of eight chairs, these design classics could make a real style statement in an office or at home.

If modern design isn’t your thing, then a classic from another time could be. The kingwood and gilt metal bureau plat of Louis XV design oozes 18th century France and is valued at between £1,200 and £1,800. A pair of late 18th/early 19th century French ebonised elbow chairs, estimated between £300 - £400, will further enhance the classic French look.

Iconic design is not limited to furniture of course with the Persian rug occupying a niche all of its own. The beautiful and vibrant colours, and numerous designs mean that there will always be one to suit your individual taste. The auction has a fine selection to peruse with estimates ranging from £700 to £900 to just £70 to £100.

And if we return to Scotland, the sale boasts two excellent examples of Scottish textiles, the first a William IV sampler worked by Richmond Kilpatrick of Edinburgh, and the second, a large and fine Paisley shawl of circa 1860. Both are valued between £200 and £400.
