Leading up to Burns Night this January, McTear’s is pleased to offer 5 splendid tempera paintings by Joseph Denham Shearer depicting the iconic poem by Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns.
Shearer, an artist native to Ayr, has an impressive artistic CV, from set design, illustration for books, his tempera series on Tam O’Shanter, and most notably his work as head illustrator for Hanna-Barbera, working on cartoons such as Scooby-Doo and The Flinstones, loved by many generations.
Shearer’s distinct and recognisable style is evident throughout, with lots of textures and expressive faces. Executed in tempera, a fast-drying medium consisting of pigment and usually egg yolk, the artworks show the incredible skill of this artist. This series of 5 lots in January’s Scottish Contemporary Art Auction feature portions of the narrative, including ‘Tam and Meg on the Brig’, ‘Tam and Meg Approaching the Brig with Cutty Sark and the Devil in Pursuit’, ‘So Maggie Runs, The Witches Follow, Wi` Mony an Eldritch Skreich and Hollow’, ‘Tam on Meg’s Back, Readying to Leave the Inn’ and ‘Tam Enjoying a Dram at the Inn’.
